First the dentist will examine the tooth and determine the appropriate treatment. It could be a simple filling, or a full crown depending on how much healthy tooth structure is remaining. Next, an anaesthetic is administered and your tooth is prepared for the restoration, removing decayed and weakened tooth tissue.

This means that on the first visit, you get an injection of anesthesia, your tooth is prepared and an impression taken, and a temporary restoration put on your tooth. Your second appointment follows this as you return to the dentist, where you will have the temporary removed and have the permanent restoration cemented permanently in place.
